Because more and more women are choosing to breastfeed their babies, more and more are finding that they enjoy it enough to continue longer than the first 6 months that are recommended. Breastfeeding to the age of 3-4 years has become increasingly common.

Breastmilk does not lose it’s nutritional value after 6 months – even beyond that time it still contains proteins, fat and other important nutrients which babies and children need. Even though 6 months is the minimum age women are recommended to breastfeed their babies until, it is encouraged that women continue breastfeeding until the age of 2.

The best answer to your question is: Whatever age your child is ready to stop. Breastfeeding only needs to stop when you and your child agree on it. You will know it’s the right time when your little one begins to ween him or herself from the breast and focus on other means of nutrition.
